Description:

Ancient Near East, Sumeria or Babylon, ca. 2nd to 1st millennium BCE. A mold-made terracotta plaque depicting a scene of a boat with two boatmen, each holding a long pole. The sides of the boat tip upward at the ends. Mesopotamia flourished in part because of its trade, and much of that was plied by simple wooden boats that carried people and goods downstream and upstream on the Tigris and Euphrates. Pottery plaques are one of the lasting art forms from ancient Mesopotamia, and give us a glimpse into religious practices and what people valued; they were often kept in the home, perhaps on a personal altar. Size: 3.3" W x 2.35" H (8.4 cm x 6 cm); 3" H (7.6 cm) on included custom stand.
