Description:

**Originally Listed At $450**

Ancient Near East, Mesopotamian, ca. 3rd millennium BCE. A lovely zoomorphic marble amulet, hand-carved with a central drilled hole for suspension on a cord. Its ovoid form is the shape of a quadruped animal with legs folded underneath the body as if resting. The pointed snout and curved back suggests that it is a boar, a fierce animal hunted and revered for its strength. Inset on the head is a black seed sized stone, the eye of the boar, making a stark contrast with the white body. The verso is slightly flattened and carved with grooves that perhaps allowed this to also function as a seal. Accompanied by modern clay roll out. Size: 2.125" L x .5" W x 1.25" H (5.4 cm x 1.3 cm x 3.2 cm)

Provenance: East Coast collection, New York Gallery, New York City, New York, USA, acquired before 2010
