Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mexico and Guatemala, Mayan Territories, Late Classic, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A heavy grey-purple stone with a rough surface, modeled into the form of a bird's head with its lower neck formed into a flattened surface used for grinding maize or other agricultural products. It may also have been used to grind hallucinogenic drugs for ritual purposes. The bird's head has a long beak, bulbous eyes, and a short crest. Size: 5.4" L x 3.15" W x 5.5" H (13.7 cm x 8 cm x 14 cm)

  • Condition: Surface wear commensurate with age, with light encrustation in lower profile areas. There is a narrow drill hole on the base and a slightly larger hole under the beak that are modern, perhaps done to display the piece.
