Lot 139A
Pre-Columbian, Ulua Valley, Honduras, Late Classic, ca. 650 to 900 CE. A very fine polychrome pottery vessel, the graceful form a cylinder with gracefully curved, convex walls that make for an elegant silhouette, meticulously decorated with a central register featuring four seated elaborately dressed casique figures alternating with four rectangular panels presenting a Quetzalcoatl variant, the magical Mesoamerican "feathered serpent", finely delineated in red, orange, and cream slip against a black ground. Above and below this center section are four narrow registers featuring stylized glyphs in that same polychrome color scheme. Quite simply a breathtaking example from the ancient Mayans! Strong painted surface. Size: 5.78" H (14.7 cm)
