Lot 140
Pre-Columbian, Peru, Huari/Wari, ca. 500 to 1000 CE. An stunning polychrome pottery kero featuring the expressive face of a shaman in transition or deity modeled upon the exterior wall with eyes, nose, and sections of the face in low relief and dramatically painted details including round eyes comprised of a black and a white vertically positioned hemispheres, an angular grey and black tail-like form painted upon the nose, an open mouth bearing both pointed fangs and rectangular teeth, and carefully delineated tattoos or face painting in black, red, and white hues. Above this visage, painted upon the flared upper section are wavy registers inhabited by abstract llama heads in profile and pawed limbs. Beneath the visage are two rows that each contain six rectangular "eyed" forms. A magical vessel, impressive for its intriguing iconography, fine painting, and pristine form.
