Description:

Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico to Guatemala, Maya, Late Classic Period, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A beautiful rectangular pendant depicting the head of a dignitary or another important figural role, all hand-carved from mottled greenstone in vibrant hues of green, beige, and cream. The poignant visage presents with generously lidded eyes beneath sweeping brows, full lips, ear spools adorned with incised X's, and a grand headdress with 2 curving plumes projecting from the sides. A suspension hole is drilled biconically through the neck and indicates it was worn on a necklace as a pendant or a fashion statement. Size: 0.5" L x 1.74" W x 2.54" H (1.3 cm x 4.4 cm x 6.5 cm)

Provenance: ex-private New York, New York, USA collection, purchased in 2011 from Joshua Wallman, who acquired them in the 1980s from Dr. Paul W. Bennett Jr.
