Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Wari (Huari) / Chancay, Transition period, ca. 700 to 1000 CE. A hand-carved wooden staff finial bearing a well-preserved countenance and lustrous, chocolate-hued patina. The slender face exhibits a pair of diamond-shaped eyes, a prominent, tab-shaped nose above parted lips, and a cylindrical hat that rests low on the protruding forehead. The depicted figure was perhaps an individual of importance, perhaps a shaman or governor, so this staff may have held some authority when first carved. Size: 1.75" L x 1.6" W x 13.1" H (4.4 cm x 4.1 cm x 33.3 cm)

Provenance: private Carroll collection, Georgia, USA, by descent; ex-private Jim Carroll collection, Maryland, USA, acquired 1960s
