Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central America, El Salvador, Maya, Copador, Late Classic Period, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A hand-built pottery cylinder of tall form with a gently swollen midsection and a planar base. The stone-burnished, beige-ground surfaces are adorned with intriguing iconography that shows a left-facing figure, perhaps a lord based on the elaborate garb, in conversation with a series of abstract beings. First in front of the regal figure is a stack of orbs surmounted by a human head with an avian-head coiffure, and behind is a vertical conch shell bearing a drooping avian head. Next is a pair of standing figures exhibiting avianesque qualities, and behind the lord is a standing attendee. All decorations are beneath a band of glyphs, and all is rendered in vibrant black and red pigment. Size: 5.89" Diameter x 7.6" H (15 cm x 19.3 cm)

Provenance: private El Monte, California, USA collection; ex-Simpson collection, Los Angeles, California, USA, acquired between 1990 - 1999
