Description:

Pre-Columbian, El Salvador, Maya, Copador, Late Classic Period, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A hand-built and highly burnished pottery bowl with a round but stable base, wide walls, a thick rim, and a shallow basin. The interior is painted with warm orange slip and ringed with a russet-hued band around the rim, and the exterior boasts a trio of abstract monkeys with circular bodies running beneath a register of large pseudo-glyphs. Four species of monkeys lived in the Maya region in pre-Columbian times: two howler monkeys, the spider monkey, and the capuchin. These animals fascinated the Maya and are common subjects of their artwork, often depicted carrying valuable goods like cacao. Size: 6.1" W x 3" H (15.5 cm x 7.6 cm).
