Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mexico and northern Central America, Maya Territories, Postclassic, ca. 1200 to 1450 CE. A carved basalt mask with a wonderfully weathered and deposit-covered surface. The mask features deepset eyes that may have once had inlays of another type of stone or precious metal, or may have been left empty to suggest the eye sockets of a skull. The nose is relatively small and short, with a long plane between its tip and the mouth. The mouth is in a straight line and has been deeply incised above a large, projecting chin. Small indentations are at the temples. Size: 4.45" W x 8.5" H (11.3 cm x 21.6 cm); 10.75" H (27.3 cm) on included custom stand.
