Description:

Indonesia, the island of Java, Majapahit Empire, ca. 1293 to 1527 CE. A fascinating and rare depiction of a pregnant woman, hand-carved from sandstone. She is dressed in finery, with large earrings, bracelets, and an elaborate necklace/pectoral. Her hair is elaborately carved, with a small portion of it gathered into a top knot and thick, flowing curls rolling down her back almost to her waist. She is otherwise nude, with a large belly and visible genitalia. Her face is serene, with heavy-lidded eyes, a broad nose, and a small, full-lipped mouth. Majapahit artwork focused chiefly on gods, goddesses, and royalty, and this figure may represent a royal wife, adorned in the ornaments of her caste. Size: 3.55" W x 7" H (9 cm x 17.8 cm); 8.25" H (21 cm) on included custom stand.
