Description:

Indonesia, the island of Java, Majapahit Empire, ca. 1293 to 1527 CE. A beautiful, well-preserved example of a sandstone carving of a woman, shown kneeling, holding a large lidded urn or vase. She is dressed in finery, wearing a multi-layered skirt with a long belt and high, banded waist, as well as multiple bracelets, large armlets, and a heavy necklace/pectoral. Giant round earrings dangle from her ears, and her hair is styled in the distinctive side bun that we know from artistic representations was favored by elite women of this culture. Her body is portrayed gracefully, with her hands resting against the urn and one knee respectively, the fingers carefully delineated by the artist. Her face is serene, with heavy-lidded eyes, a thin nose, and a small, full-lipped mouth. Overall, the sculpture portrays a beautiful, elite young woman, dressed in the finery of her caste. Size: 3.75" L x 3.5" W x 6.05" H (9.5 cm x 8.9 cm x 15.4 cm)
