Description:

Ancient Near East, Northwestern Iran, Luristan, ca. 1200 to 800 BCE. A fascinating brass axe head of a fenestrated (duckbill) and socketed form. The curved bit has slightly bent flanges and is connected to the open socket via a slender, crested neck. A knob-like butt extends opposite the bit, intended to off-set the weight. The fenestrated or "windowed" (from the Latin "fenestrare") form was intended to lighten the overall weight of the axe head and allow for easier wielding. Size: 5.3" L x 1.1" W x 4.9" H (13.5 cm x 2.8 cm x 12.4 cm)
