Description:

Pre-Columbian, Northern Peru, Inca Empire, ca. 1470 to 1532 CE. A finely preserved vessel known as an aryballos, hand-built from orange-brown pottery with highly burnished surfaces. The rotund vessel presents with a conical base, a bell-shaped body with a sloped shoulder, a cylindrical neck, a flared rim with a pair of petite lugs along the underside, and a pair of perforated loop handles along the midsection of the body. The vessel is first covered in red-orange slip and then embellished with a white collar around the neck. The obverse of the body features two ladder-form columns enclosed with white, black, and red bars, and additional bars just inside the two loop handles enclose the entire frontal design.
