**First Time At Auction**

Louis Recchia (American, b. 1949). "The Power of Cheese" mixed media, 2003. Signed in reverse at lower left. Dated at lower right. Artist, title, and date on verso. A whimsical mixed media piece by Louis Recchia with painted as well as collage elements. The composition features a mouse wearing a shirt and necktie, walking toward Snow White, and wielding a block of swiss cheese. Frightened by this, Snow White and her anthropomorphic television-headed sidekick raise their hands as if this is a "stick up". The setting - comprised of a mirrored old city wall and sidewalk as well as a comparatively modern, zigzagging black road outlined in yellow, all beneath a balmy sky of cotton candy pink and blue hues - is quite imaginative. Recchia's figural imagery is at once graphic, akin to comic strip art and painterly with moments of rich impasto. A marvelous piece that muses on "The Power of Cheese"! Size: 20.1" L x 20.2" W (51.1 cm x 51.3 cm)

About the artist: "Louis Recchia has been producing contemporary art in Denver for over three decades. Over the years, his paintings have been shown in many places including the Museum of Modern Art, Vienna; the Brooklyn Museum, New York; and the Denver Art Museum.

'The central theme in my work is the question of who we are. It explores the emotions and relationships of individuals to each other as well as to society.'

'The found objects in my work are used much as an anthropologist might study the artifacts of past cultures, giving insights to who these people were. The things we make, value and then discard reveal more about us than words ever could. The ubiquitous use of mirrors in my work reinforces this theme of looking at ourselves; though the image is invariably distorted and fragmented.'"
