**First Time At Auction**

Louis Recchia (American, b. 1949). "Hopeful Dreams" mixed media, 2000. Signed and dated on frame below image. Artist and title on verso. A whimsical mixed media piece by Louis Recchia with reverse painting and collage elements as well as an elaborately decorated frame. The composition features a bizarre scene with a pink polka dotted dress floating in the air, a lit candlestick on the floor, an anthropomorphic teacup walking towards a retro television set or radio, a standing lamp, and finally a grand flower arrangement on a tilted table. Adding more drama to the scene is a shimmering wall made from crumpled metallic red paper, collaged cutout paintings of medieval archways superimposed on the wall, and a receding collaged black and white checkerboard floor. Note such floors were first used in Renaissance paintings to demonstrate linear perspective; however, in this piece, Recchia's inclusion of the checkerboard floor demonstrates how unsettled all of the elements in this scene appear. Finally, Recchia's artistic energy extends to the frame with his abstract expressionist drips and swirls of white paint and cut mirror pieces appled over a sky blue background. Size: 17.125" L x 19.625" W (43.5 cm x 49.8 cm)

About the artist: "Louis Recchia has been producing contemporary art in Denver for over three decades. Over the years, his paintings have been shown in many places including the Museum of Modern Art, Vienna; the Brooklyn Museum, New York; and the Denver Art Museum.

'The central theme in my work is the question of who we are. It explores the emotions and relationships of individuals to each other as well as to society.'

'The found objects in my work are used much as an anthropologist might study the artifacts of past cultures, giving insights to who these people were. The things we make, value and then discard reveal more about us than words ever could. The ubiquitous use of mirrors in my work reinforces this theme of looking at ourselves; though the image is invariably distorted and fragmented.'"
