Description:

Native American, Alaska, Inuit, Aleutian, or Punuk peoples, Pre-contact period, ca. 100 to 1000 CE. A fine gathering of one smoothing stick and five pipe stems, each hand-carved from caribou bone or that of another ungulate. Three of the pipe stems have cylindrical forms with protruding discoid mouthpieces, stocky bodies with smooth grooves for fitting on a pipe, and small laterally-carved holes, with a fourth bearing a tapered cylindrical profile and a spherical mouthpiece, and the last with a wide ovoid form and a shallow recess encircling the body. The smoothing stick has a tapered ovoid form with a small gripping notch on top and a rounded tip worn from use. Nice patina covers each component of this wonderful ensemble. Size of largest (smoothing stick): 3.8" L (9.7 cm).
