Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Roman, Imperial, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A lovely ensemble of 5 hand-carved intaglios, 4 of carnelian and 1 of garnet, all in ovoid form and boasting lovely hues of crimson, pink, burgundy, and scarlet. The first and largest of the intaglios is made from carnelian and displays the incised image of a robed figure, likely Diana (Greek Artemis), wielding a sword in one hand and placing their other hand on their hip. Also sculpted from carnelian, the second intaglio features Mercury (Greek Hermes) holding a caduceus. The third ancient carnelian intaglio shows the image of two circles, while the fourth exhibits the representation of a lotus. The last intaglio is made from garnet and presents an incised minimalistic, abstract motif. Size of largest: 0.5" L x 0.25" W (1.3 cm x 0.6 cm)
