Description:

Pre-Columbian, Belize, Maya Classic Period, ca. 550 to 900 CE. Five fascinating grey, blue, lavender, and cream colored chert "eccentrics". Two are in the form of bats, with "M" shaped bodies and wings spread. A third is a simplified bat form, which resembles a "C" from one side. Another is circular with tiny teeth around its edges. The last is "S" shaped, resembling a wave. Chert flints are made using percussion, striking them with other stones; the process required to get a fine point requires training and skill. Flints carved not as weapons, but as interesting designs, had sacrificial and ceremonial use for the Maya, and are often found as offerings in caches inside of stone monuments and other architectural features. Size of largest ("S"): 2" W x 4.95" H (5.1 cm x 12.6 cm)
