Description:

Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico to Guatemala, Maya, Late Classic Period, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A fine pottery fragment from a large incensario vessel. The fragment has a large bottom rim, tall walls, and an abstract face mask depicting the sun god Kinich Ahau (designated as god G when referring to the codices) with circular eyes, puffy lips, gaunt cheeks, and spool-adorned ears. Faint strips of original white pigment are visible along the rim and top of the obverse. Size: 8" W x 8" H (20.3 cm x 20.3 cm).

  • Condition: This is a fragment of a larger incensario. Deity mask repaired from a few large pieces, with small chips and adhesive residue along break lines. Light abrasions to wall portion and face mask, with softening to some finer details, and fading to original pigmentation. Light earthen deposits and encrustations throughout.
