West Africa, Ghana, Fante peoples, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A lovely ensemble of four hand-carved wooden figures, each with cylindrical bodies, stocky necks with incised rings, and characteristically-elongated heads with minimalist facial features. The single male figure boasts an incised sun on the front of his chest, and the 3 females are each adorned with strands of small beads. Figures like these examples were carried by young women to increase their fertility as well as to ensure the birth of a healthy child. Size of largest (female w/ red beads): 2.3" W x 10.3" H (5.8 cm x 26.2 cm); 11.2" H (28.4 cm) on included custom stand.
