East Asia, China, ca. early to mid 20th century (pre-WWII) CE. A quartet of jadeite pendants, each shaped like a lotus flower, with incised detail - but each with subtle differences that make them unique. All have been repeatedly drilled to form decoration and places for suspension. The lotus flower is one of the Eight Auspicious Symbols of Buddhism and had great symbolic meaning for Chinese Buddhists. The colors of the jadeite range from creamy white to mottled forest green with grey. Size of largest: 2.3" W x 1.45" H (5.8 cm x 3.7 cm)

Provenance: private Palm Springs, California, USA collection, acquired before 1965; ex-private American collection that left China in 1949

  • Condition: All have some small scratches commensurate with age and two - notably the palest one - have some tiny losses to their peripheries. Light deposits on all surfaces. All have perforations that serve as decoration as well as suspension holes.
