Description:

Roman, Holy Land, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 4th century CE. A fine gathering of mold-formed pottery oil lamps from the Roman Holy Land. First is a lamp of a simple design with a flat base, a circular body, and a short wick spout. Second is a white-slipped lamp with a raised ring base, a sloped shoulder adorned with raised leafy vine motifs, and a recessed neck channel. The largest lamp has an orange-slipped surface, a faint planta pedis (maker's mark) beneath the base, a tab-shaped handle, and raised grape bunches decorating the shoulder. Size of largest (grape bunches): 2.1" W x 1.8" H (5.3 cm x 4.6 cm).
