Description:

West Africa, Togo, Ewe peoples, ca. mid-20th century CE. A fine gathering of three hand-carved wooden dolls, the middle being female and the two outer figures are male. Each presents with broad torsos and attenuated arms atop delineated legs, and the minimalist visages are defined by almond-shaped eyes and slender noses. Dolls like these examples are called "venovi" or "venavi" and typically wear bright textile garments. The Ewe usually carve twin figures intended for protection following the death of a twin. Ewe women care for such dolls by cleaning and 'feeding' them, and at times even using such dolls as a replacement child. Size: 2.5" W x 7.875" H (6.4 cm x 20 cm); 10.7" H (27.2 cm) on included custom stand.
