Description:

Ancient Near East, Mesopotamia, ca. 2nd millennium BCE. A fine gathering of three carved black stone cylinder seals, each with a unique set of incised designs and accompanying putty roll-out. The first seal displays an intricate set of sharp angles, triangular shapes, and cross patterns consistent with ancient Akkadian script. The second seal depicts three supplicants standing behind a seated lord or ruler, and a fourth supplicant tending to the lord's goblet. The third seal has a wonderful animal motif, with a upper row of stylized scorpions, a middle row of recumbent antelopes or horses, and a lower row of horizontal spears, perhaps depicting a hunting scene. All three seals are pierced through their respective centers for suspension, and all are beautiful examples of some of the earliest forms of writing and artistic style. Size of largest: 0.875" H (2.2 cm).
