Description:

Pre-Columbian, Belize, Preclassic Maya Period, ca. 250 BCE to 250 CE. A trio of intriguing grey chert "eccentrics" - one in the form of a lizard, seem from above with its limbs sprawled to the sides and its long tail out behind its body; another in a horseshoe shape; the third like two C's joined at their backs. Chert flints are made using percussion, striking them with other stones; the process required to get a fine point requires training and skill. These are all grey with faint hints of rich pink, purple, and cream. Flints carved not as weapons, but as interesting designs, had sacrificial and ceremonial use for the Maya, and are often found as offerings in caches inside of stone monuments and other architectural features. Size of lizard: 2" W x 3.7" H (5.1 cm x 9.4 cm)
