Description:

Eastern Europe / Central Asia, Russia, Perm region, Perm Animal Style (Permian Animal Style), Proto-Viking, ca. 8th to 9th century CE. Two beautiful and well-preserved white bronze (a copper alloy with a high percentage of tin) pendants, perhaps made to be attached to a belt or a saddle. Each pendant takes the form of an abstract avian figure, one having a petite head and hemispherical body with applied, faux-granulated motifs, the other of similar form with a projecting tail section. Both have suspension loops on their undersides for attaching slender chains and ornamentation. Size of larger: 1.45" W x 0.95" H (3.7 cm x 2.4 cm)

  • Condition: Nice, albeit very different, patinas on both - different because of the variable alloys used to make each. Both pendants have expected age-commensurate surface wear. One is missing a loop and chain (the other is present), and the other is missing a chain. Both have light earthen deposits throughout, and the largest displays lovely green patina in some areas.
