Description:

Western Africa, Togo, Ewe peoples; Ghana, Mina (or Elmina) peoples, ca. mid-20th century CE. A fine set of two hand-carved wooden figures from two prominent West African cultures. First is a Ewe venavi female figure with tab-shaped hands, cylindrical breasts, rounded shoulders, and a petite head with a bulbous nose. Second is a Mina female figure with a distended abdomen, perky breasts, sloping shoulders, and a large head replete with almond-shaped eyes and a textured coiffure. Each figure stands with delineated legs atop integral platforms, and both are covered in lustrous caramel-hued patina. Size of largest (Mina): 2.1" W x 5.375" H (5.3 cm x 13.7 cm); 5.875" H (14.9 cm) on included custom stand.
