Description:

Western Africa, Nigeria, Yoruba peoples; Togo, Ewe peoples; Ghana, Mina (or Elmina) peoples; ca. mid-20th century CE. A fine gathering of three hand-carved wooden figures from three distinct West African cultures. First is a Ewe venovi male figure with elongated arms, a distended abdomen, and a bulbous head with large semicircular eyes. Second is a Mina female figure with perky breasts, tab-shaped hands, and an ovoid head with recessed coffee-bean-shaped eyes. Last is a Yoruba standing ibeji female figure with attenuated legs, arms fused to hips, and an upturned head with a crested coiffure. Size of largest (Yoruba): 3" W x 6.2" H (7.6 cm x 15.7 cm).

  • Condition: Ewe and Mina figures have losses to bases. All figures have minor abrasions to limbs and bodies, with softening to some finer details, and light encrustations. Nice earthen deposits and fabulous patina throughout.
