Description:

Pre-Columbian, El Salvador, Maya, Copador, Late Classic Period, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A fine set of 2 hand-built pottery bowls displaying characteristic Copador stylization. The smaller bowl boasts indented walls, a flared rim, and a deep basin atop a spiral-grooved base. The basin displays a register of 6 stylized turkeys surrounding an red-painted central circle with intersecting lines and four balls, and the exterior shows a register of colorful pseudo-glyphs in red and black pigment atop a cream ground. The larger bowl has a similarly-spiralized base, short walls, and a basin decorated with a repeating register of enclosed pseudo-glyphs in "E" and "J" forms. Size: 8.625" W x 3.2" H (21.9 cm x 8.1 cm).

  • Condition: Both bowls repaired from multiple pieces with small losses, chips, and light adhesive residue along break lines. Both items have chips and abrasions to rim, walls, basin, and base, with fading to original pigmentation in some areas, and light encrustations. Light earthen deposits and nice traces of original pigmentation throughout.
