Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE; Michoacan, Tarascan style, Post-Classic period, ca. mid-16th century CE. A set of two hand-built pottery bowls from different periods in Western Mexico. The smaller Tarascan bowl has a deep basin, a thick rim, and a painted register of red and tan linear motifs, all atop a trio of nubbin-shaped feet. The larger Jalisco bowl is defined by a round but stable base, tall walls that terminate in a thin rim, and a deep basin. The exterior surface presents two distinct areas of geometric motifs separated down the middle, and the interior exhibits a sinuous snake with a diamond-shaped head. Size of largest (snake motif): 7.125" W x 3" H (18.1 cm x 7.6 cm).

  • Condition: Larger bowl repaired from multiple pieces with light restoration as well as some resurfacing and overpainting along break lines. Both bowls have minor nicks and abrasions to rim, body, and base, with light fading to original pigmentation. Light earthen deposits throughout.
