Description:

Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico, Guerrero region, Mezcala culture, ca. 500 to 200 BCE. A pair of stone axe gods of a highly abstract style, the humanoid details rendered to the most minimal of forms. Aptly placed string-cut lines and grooves delineate the legs, arms, head, and mouths on both. These simplified stone figures from the Guerrero region were dubbed as "axe gods" based on scholars' suppositions that they were carved from repurposed stone axe heads that had been damaged or otherwise unusable. Size: 5.75" L x 3" W (14.6 cm x 7.6 cm)

Provenance: ex-Idledale, Colorado, USA collection; ex-Arte Primitivo Gallery, New York City, New York, USA
