Description:

Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico, Guerrero region, Mezcala culture, ca. 600 to 100 BCE. A set of 2 hand-carved greenstone axe god figures, each of characteristically abstract form. Shallow, string-cut grooves denote the neck line and legs, of each figure while the larger bears minimalist facial features. Axe god figures are so named because scholars believe they were fashioned from damaged or otherwise unusable stone axe heads. Size of largest: 1.52" L x 1.71" W x 3.95" H (3.9 cm x 4.3 cm x 10 cm)

Provenance: private Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA collection; ex-Minerva Gallery; ex-Benjamin Vega, California, USA, acquired in 2006 to 2007; ex-Gene and Virginia George, brought to the USA from 1961 to 1966
