Indonesia, Borneo, Dayak, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A handsome pair of finely carved wooden vessels. One from the Kayanic Dayak Complex (early to mid 20th c) depicts a zoomorphic form standing on four legs with a stubby tail at the rear and genitalia below. The animal presents an oversized head with a protruding forehead, perky ears, boldly carved circular eyes, pointed nose, and open mouth adorned by a diamond-shaped motif. Incised stylized motifs also decorate the legs and shoulders, and his back is carved with a receptacle for medicines. Joining this piece is an early 20th C. Berewan Dayak wooden vessel depicting two seated animals who hold a central bowl-like receptacle that presents a sun-like visage on each side. This vessel was likely used for mixing medicine or tattoo ink. Size: longer is 7.5" L x 3.375" H (19 cm x 8.6 cm)

  • Condition: Vessel with two animals shows some stable hairline age cracks. Vessel depicting crawling animal has possible loss to tail, but is otherwise excellent. The wood of both has developed an attractive lustrous patina.
