Description:

East Asia, China, Later Neolithic Hongshan culture, ca. 3500 to 2500 BCE. Wow! An incredibly rare nephrite jade artifact: a solid, heavy, mottled white, green, and pale yellow stone, formed over hundreds of hours by artisans into a cylinder and drilled vertically through its center. The exterior is ringed with low, tightly spaced nubs that create a fascinating texture that is pleasing to touch. Hongshan period jades come from both ceremonial and funerary contexts; they have been found placed on or near foundations of ceremonial structures, as at Dongshanzui, as well as in elite tombs. The material was incredibly valuable and reserved for the most elite purposes in Neolithic Chinese society. Size: 2.5" W x 1.7" H (6.4 cm x 4.3 cm)

Provenance: ex-Leonard Lyle Dees, Topeka, Kansas, USA collection, acquired 1950-1970
