Description:

Near East, Holy Land, Byzantine Empire, ca. 7th to 10th century CE. A fine gathering of two cast-copper stamps, each of a circular form with integral semicircular attachment loops on the verso. The first stamp exhibits an openwork design with a central cross surrounded by tapering points projecting from each interior corner. The second stamp has a raised six-pointed star encircling a small central circle. Both stamps are covered in fine green and blue-green patina. Size of largest (openwork): 2.1" W (5.3 cm).

  • Condition: Larger stamp has losses to suspension loop on verso. Smaller stamp repaired from multiple pieces with light stabilization material on verso. Both items have small nicks to peripheries and interior details, and light encrustations. Light earthen deposits as well as great green and blue-green patina throughout.
