Byzantine Empire, Justinian II, second reign, 705 to 711 CE. gold solidus, 4.4 grams. Obverse: Draped bust of Christ facing, with cross behind his head, raising his right hand in benediction and holding book of Gospels in his left. Reverse: Crowned facing bust of Justinian II, wearing loros and holding cross potent on three steps in his right hand and patriarchal cross on globe inscribed PAX in his left. Justinian II was the first Byzantine emperor to place the portrait of Christ on a coin. DOC 1. MIB 1. SB 1413.
