Description:

Atlantic Ocean, found in the Chandler Bridge Formation, Charleston County, South Carolina, USA, Oligocene Period, ca. 33 to 22 million years ago. A nicely preserved pair of teeth from Carcharocles angustidens, a species of prehistoric megatoothed shark related to the megalodon. Each tooth has a pretty pale grey color on its enamel, with a reddish brown fossilized root. As with most extinct sharks, we only know of this example from teeth and a few fossilized vertebrae - because shark skeletons are composed of cartilage, they generally do not fossilize. The most complete remains of this species was found in New Zealand, and from that we can estimate that it was much larger than any shark living today - around 31 feet long (modern Great Whites range from 11 to 21 feet in length)! The teeth are distinctive because of their serrated side cusps, clearly visible on both of these specimens. Size of one (they are very similar in size): 3" W x 4" H (7.6 cm x 10.2 cm)
