Description:

Roman, Holy Land, Eastern Roman Empire, Imperial Period, ca. 2nd to 4th century CE. A lovely gathering of ten mold-formed pottery oil lamps from the Roman Holy Land. Five lamps have discoid bodies with no thumb rests, and three have similarly shaped bodies with miniscule thumb rests. One lamp has raised netting motifs on the sides of an open fill hole, and the largest lamp is of a similar design but without a fill hole. Lucite display stands for photography purposes only. Size of largest (no fill hole): 4.2" L x 2.625" W (10.7 cm x 6.7 cm)

Provenance: private Dunn collection, Coral Springs, Florida, USA, acquired in the 1990s

  • Condition: Repair and restoration to side of one discoid lamp with no thumb rest, and largest lamp repaired from multiple pieces, both with light adhesive residue along new material and break lines. All items have light abrasions and nicks to bases, wick spouts, and peripheries, with softening to some finer details, light encrustations, and fading to pigment where applicable. Nice earthen deposits throughout.
