Central Asia, Nepal, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden mask of Mahakala, the fierce deity of death and protection. The obverse displays grand facial features painted in red, green, and yellow pigment, and the verso shows both head straps as well as an inserted wooden plank for displaying the mask when not in use. Mahakala represents the power of transformation and protection in Buddhist practice. His fearsome appearance reflects the determination to overcome obstacles and the dedication to the path of enlightenment. Size: 6" L x 10.375" W x 11.5" H (15.2 cm x 26.4 cm x 29.2 cm)
