Description:

Rome, ca. 0 CE. This is a heavy bronze handle attachment molded in the face of Silenus, the tutor/follower of Dionysus, always depicted as an older man with a large, full beard. This particular piece has three drilled holes and two hollowed out spaces at the sides of the head for attaching it. The consumption of wine was an important social ritual in early Roman society and Silenus is a common figure whose likeness signified the owner's affiliation with the cult of Dionysus -- think showing off a brand name for a popular type of beer today. Size: 3.5" W x 3.5" H (8.9 cm x 8.9 cm).
