Description:

"Les amateurs de tableaux a l'hotel Bouillon" by Charles Maurand (French, 1824-1904 CE) after Honore Victorin Daumier (French, 1808-1879 CE) printed by Francois Louis Schmied (Swiss, 1873-1941 CE). A wood engraving on cream hued Japanese paper, numbered 1 of 75. Another example may be found in the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago. Maurand created this engraving after a work of the Honore Daumier entitled "The Amateurs" (1865-1868 CE) currently in the collection of the Walters Art Museum. Daumier is known as the Michelangelo of caricature who created memorable satirical water colors and lithographs mocking the French bourgeoisie and revealing the sad state of the masses. In addition to being a prominent printmaker and painter, he was also a sculptor. Poet and critic Charles Baudelaire described Daumier as, "one of the most important men . . . (not) only of caricature, but also modern art." Notice how Maurand includes depictions of both Daumier seated at left in the foreground (his chair is labeled h. Daumier) and himself on the lower right (his chair signed Maurand). Even more fabulous and apropos to the Artemis family, this scene depicts an auction; notice the auctioneer in the background, poised to hammer the final price.
