Description:

Mediterranean region of Europe/Levant/Turkey, later Byzantine Empire, ca. 1200 to 1453 CE. A fantastic find, probably once carved to decorate a church or a tomb, this is a relief stone carving of the Nativity. Mary is on one side, her arms raised, and St. Joseph on the other; both are seated in interesting openwork chairs. Between them is the Christ Child, lying in the manger with His head slightly raised and graced by a carved halo. A donkey and a bull peer in on the scene from the upper center. Four iron bars that meet in the back are wrap around the stone, probably a later addition designed to frame the artwork, dating to the 18th or 19th century CE. Size: 2" L x 10.25" W x 6.55" H (5.1 cm x 26 cm x 16.6 cm)
