Description:

Southeast Asia, Thailand, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden coconut grater in the form of a defensive dog. The canine presents crouched upon bent legs atop an integral rectangular plinth and has a stocky body, a thick tail protruding from the posterior, and narrow ears draped gently atop the shoulders. The raised head bears incised eyes, a broad snout, and a projecting tongue which serves as a platform for the serrated iron grating tool. Traces of red and pink pigment are visible in scattered areas across the legs and body. Size: 11.9" L x 4.5" W x 7.1" H (30.2 cm x 11.4 cm x 18 cm)

  • Condition: Minor nicks and abrasions to base, body, head, and grating tool, with fading to original pigmentation, and softening to some finer details, otherwise intact and very good. Light traces of original pigment as well as nice patina throughout.
