Description:

New World, Native American, East Coast, probably Maine, Penobscot Indians, ca. late 19th century CE. A lovely and lengthy tobacco pipe made from three hand-carved wooden components. The main pipe body is tubular in form and decorated with thick painted stripes in hues of emerald, citrine, chocolate, and ruby. A small mouthpiece is inserted into one end and has a tapered form which terminates in a grooved ovoid tip. At the other end is a large tobacco receptacle with a conical tip, a squat stem, and a large bowl with a curved red stripe on either side and a green "X" on the front. A small knotted twine hangs between the stem and conical tip, serving as a suspension loop when not in use. Size: 19" L x 2.75" H (48.3 cm x 7 cm).

  • Condition: Surface wear and abrasions commensurate with age and use as expected, small nicks to receptacle, mouthpiece, and pipe body, fading to some areas of pigmentation, and light char marks inside bowl. Light earthen deposits throughout. Nice craquelure to painted designs around the receptacle and on the conical tip and mouthpiece.
