Description:

Central Asia, Himalayan region, Nepal, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A lovely conch shell trumpet known as a Sankha with a spiraling form and a petite mouthpiece on the top. A shell trumpet like this example is a powerful object in Nepalese and Tibetan Buddhism that is used to call monks to prayer, to summon benevolent spirits, and to participate in ceremonial rituals.
