Native American, Southwestern United States, Hopi, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A hand-coiled basket crafted using thick bundles of grass as the foundation, with dyed yucca splints sewn on top to create a floral petal motif. The basket is substantial in weight, with tightly packed coils, a hallmark of Hopi baskets from this period. Size: 11" Diameter x 7" H (27.9 cm x 17.8 cm)

  • Condition: Losses, possibly from mice, to the coil and splints on a 2 inch section of the interior, but the coil is not unraveling and holding together due to the density of the grasses. Losses to splints on the exterior base, the rim and a few other areas. Dark discoloration and patina. Overall good condition for age.
