Description:

Native American, Southwestern United States, Arizona, Coolidge, Hohokam culture, ca. 950 to 1450 CE. This collection features four stone and bone artifacts, each shaped as a tubular form that may have been used as medicine pipes to aid in removing infections, foreign objects, or bad spirits. Two of the pipes are crafted from porous lava rock, one from soft sandstone, and the fourth from ungulate bone. These implements, known by various names today - such as cloud blowers, blowing tubes, sucking tubes, tube pipes, or cupping horns - were employed by shamans in healing rituals. They blew into or applied suction to wounds or infected areas, often incorporating smoke or other medicinal substances. All artifacts were reportedly discovered in the 1930s by a farmer in Coolidge, near the Casa Grande Ruins, a structure built by the Hohokam people around 1150 to 1450 CE. Size of largest: 1.9" L x 1.5" W (4.8 cm x 3.8 cm).
