Description:

Southeast Asia, Burma (present day Myanmar), ca. late 19th to first decade of 20th century CE. A gilded bronze Buddha depicted in the lion's pose - the so-called Parinirvana Buddha, reclining upon a tiered lotus pedestal with flaming borders - comprised of cast bronze and adorned with gilt and red lacquer. The Buddha lies tranquilly upon his right side, his right arm supporting his head, his left arm resting on his side. The Buddha wears an ornate sanghati; his visage is one of peace having achieved nirvana, with closed eyes, elongated earlobes, a tightly curled coiffure topped by a flame ushnisha. Size: 7.25" L x 5" W (18.4 cm x 12.7 cm)

The term "parinirvana" literally means "nirvana following death" and is used to describe a state achieved upon death by an individual who has rightfully attained nirvana. This piece most likely depicts the Parinirvana of Buddha Shakyamuni. According to tradition, after he ate his last meal offered by a blacksmith named Cunda, Shakyamuni grew seriously ill and in time abandoned his earthly existence in the village known as Pava, surrounded by his disciples and attendants.
