Description:

Southeast Asia, Burma (Myanmar), ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A cast-bronze bell known as a chu meant to adorn the neck of an elephant. The spherical bell features a program of engraved floral and curvilinear motifs along the upper body, a pair of enclosed panels containing the name of the bell's maker, and a perforated suspension loop on top. The bell hangs between a pair of slender rods held within an arched framework meant for display when not in use. Size (bell): 3.3" W x 4.25" H (8.4 cm x 10.8 cm); (wooden framework): 8.5" W x 10.875" H (21.6 cm x 27.6 cm)

  • Condition: Minor abrasions to bell and framework, with softening to some engraved details on bell, otherwise intact and very good. Great patina throughout. Bell clapper still produces vibrant sound when jostled.
